2010 Animal Shelter Quilt Block Challenge

Plans for the 2010 Animal Shelter Quilt are underway! Here's how you can participate:

  1. Make one or more blocks, sized 12 1/2" unfinished (preferably) or 4 1/2" or 8 1/2" or eve 4 1/2" x 12 1/2" (please use a multiple of 4, no larger than 12 1/2" square)
  2. Your block can be pieced, or appliquéd, or both.
  3. You can use a traditional quilt block, or any block you like. If you appliqué, it could be a dog, a cat, a bone, a doghouse - anything related to dogs and/or cats. There is also traditional blocks of pieced dogs or cats.
  4. The colors you use should coordinate with Moda Pattern #10747 called "ColorPlay!" by Cheri L. Strole in pink. The fabric is available at Lost Pines Quilt Shop in Bastrop. It comes in three colors, but we are using the PINK version because that's the one they had the most of. You can buy a fat quarter if you want to use this fabric in your block, but you do NOT have to use it. The fabric is full of bright colors you can use: blue, pink, green, yellow, orange. Use solids, tone on tones, or marbled fabrics, because #10747 is a very busy design.
  5. If you need a "background" fabric, use unbleached muslim. Please do not use white.

I will bring snippets of this fabric to the December and January Guild meetings for you to use to match your fabrics. Let your imagination soar! Appliqué a green water dish on a pink lawn! Make a dog and/or cat in colors Mother Nature never intended!

We will vote for our favorite completed block, with awards to the one(s) with the highest vote count. The blocks that fit together best will be used in the quilt. The others will go to Community Service for charity quilts, so every block will find a home.

Blocks are due by the March meeting. Be sure to put your name on the back of your block(s) if you want to be included in the voting.

You can see the fabric by clicking here or by clicking here.

Questions? Email or phone Vickie (contact information listed in guild directory). Email may be faster!

Your participation is appreciated!

Animal Shelter Quilt Deadline Reminder

Remember that your block for the 2010 animal shelter quilt must be turned in by the March meeting. If you want your block considered for a special award, stick an address label on the back or otherwise mark your block. Everyone at the March meeting can vote for their favorite block. The top vote-getter will receive a $15 gift certificate. Second place will get a $10 certificate and third place a $5. And you will be helping the shelter house homeless dogs and cats, so everybody wins!

Instructions for the block were in the December newsletter and are on the web site (see above). Thank you for your participation!
